Cook Plant Security Team Celebrates Five Years of Injury-Free Work

The Security Officers at Cook Plant have a reason to be proud. They have achieved a remarkable milestone of five years without an OSHA recordable injury. This means that none of the officers have suffered any work-related injury or illness that required medical treatment beyond first aid.

The milestone was reached on October 22, 2023, and it represents 1,500,000 hours of work during that five-year period. The security officers were recognized for their outstanding performance in safety over the weekend.

This achievement is even more impressive when considering the nature and demands of their job. The security officers are responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the plant. They carry around 25 pounds of gear on their person for 12 hours a day. They are the only group that has to run for their job while wearing all of their tools, as they undergo rigorous training and exercises, such as the tactical course, the physical fitness course, and other drills and exercises. They also perform live firearms training a minimum of four times a year in order to maintain their skills, accuracy and qualifications. They work in all kinds of weather, from the hot summer days to the freezing winter nights, and they are always on, 24/7/365.

How did they achieve this level of safety? According to security manager Cory Shimulunas, “It was through the engagement of each officer and supervisor. The security officers have been proactive in reporting Good Catches and correcting any unsafe conditions, such as potential hazards, near misses, and low-level learnings. They have also been collaborating with Cook’s various Maintenance teams to address any issues that could affect their safety or the safety of others. They have been supportive and encouraging of each other, fostering a culture of safety and teamwork.”

Cory also said that he was very proud of his team and their accomplishment. They have set a high standard for themselves, the site, and for the industry, and they will continue to strive for excellence in safety and security. Cook Plant thanks our Security Team for their dedication and professionalism, and congratulates them on their success!
