Utility Career Day held at Cooper Nuclear Station
"The goal of Utility Career Day was to get students from southeast Nebraska interested in careers available at Cooper Nuclear Station,” said Lead Human Resources Business Partner Amy Behrends. “In addition, we wanted to expose them to technical careers as many students lack knowledge and understanding of these types of jobs.”
While traditional career fairs involve students moving from one table to the next to collect printed materials and swag, Utility Career Day took a more interactive approach to recruitment and education. CNS teammates from mechanical maintenance, electrical maintenance, valve team, instrument and control, radiation protection, security, chemistry, enterprise technology, operations and engineering prepared interactive stations and labs for the students to rotate between, giving each student a glimpse of the work performed in that department. In addition to the hands-on activities, students received a tour of CNS, including stops in the control room simulator, intake structure, fuel bundle and control rod displays, control room corridor, and turbine deck.
According to Maintenance Manager Matt Hug, “Utility Career Day was a success for CNS. It gave our teammates an opportunity to demonstrate the important work that they do to operate and maintain a nuclear power plant, but it also exposed the students to career fields that they may not have realized exist.”
