STP proves storm readiness and community partnership

STP Nuclear Operating Company has taken pride in their ability to operate safely and reliably for many years. Recent events allowed the company to demonstrate both their resilience in severe weather, as well as their dedication to community support.

On July 8, Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Matagorda County, Texas near the South Texas Project. Thanks to the dedication of their team, STP maintained full power operation of both units throughout the storm. Kym Harshaw, STP’s Chief Nuclear Officer and Acting President and Chief Executive Officer, stated, “I’m enormously proud of our team at STP for keeping our units safely operating through the storm to provide Texans with the power they need. We have demonstrated the resilience of nuclear energy with our storm response.”

STP’s operational success was matched by its commitment to the local community. Recognizing the widespread impact of Hurricane Beryl, the company took immediate steps to help where they could in assisting those affected in Matagorda County and surrounding areas. STP started by supplying drinks to first responders, acknowledging their critical role in the community’s safety and recovery. STP also provided meals to the Matagorda County Emergency Operations Center and the Palacios Chamber of Commerce, ensuring that those coordinating relief efforts were supported.

Further demonstrating their commitment, STP partnered with Serve Outdoors, a local non-profit, to cook and serve lunch to residents of Sargent. Sargent is an area within the county that was severely impacted by the storm. This meal offering was extended to the volunteers and first responders who were integral to the recovery efforts.

In addition to these efforts, STP also offered a helping hand through a donation to The Friends of Elder Citizens organization in Palacios, Texas. The organization operates a senior center that sustained significant damage from the storm. This contribution will help support repairs to the facility so that the area seniors continue to receive the food and services they need.

Through these efforts, STP Nuclear Operating Company demonstrated its unwavering commitment to both operational excellence and community support. The response to Hurricane Beryl highlighted the strength and dedication of STP’s team, reaffirming the company’s role as a reliable energy provider and a committed community partner.
