Our Strategy

Utilities Service Alliance (USA) is a not-for-profit cooperative of electric utilities that own and operate nuclear power plants, united by a shared commitment to safety, operational excellence, and delivering measurable value to members and the communities they serve. Through collaboration, shared best practices, and strategic partnerships, USA enables its members to achieve top-quartile performance while maintaining the flexibility of independent operations.

Benefits

USA’s membership represents a diverse fleet of nuclear generating assets across the United States and internationally, including large-scale baseload facilities such as Perry, Davis-Besse, Beaver Valley, and global partners like Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power. These facilities provide reliable, around-the-clock electricity that forms the backbone of a resilient and secure energy grid.

ENERGY LEADERSHIP

Through strategic collaboration, USA empowers nuclear operators to achieve cost-effective excellence and peak performance, securing nuclear energy’s vital role in a clean energy future.

ADVANCING SUSTAINABILITY

Through its 2025 partnership with Curio, USA is advancing nuclear sustainability by exploring NuCycle® technology to recycle fuel, drastically reduce waste, and secure a closed-loop supply chain for the future.

UNIFIED VISION

USA is dedicated to a sustainable energy future by optimizing existing nuclear assets and advancing next-generation technologies through strategic collaboration to ensure nuclear remains an indispensable, carbon-free anchor for global energy security.

Nuclear Energy: The Foundation of Clean, Reliable Power

From a USA perspective, nuclear energy is not simply part of the clean energy mix—it is essential to achieving a sustainable, carbon-free future.

According to the Nuclear Energy Institute, nuclear power:

  • Produces nearly half of America’s carbon-free electricity.
  • Prevents over 470 million metric tons of CO₂ emissions annually—equivalent to removing more than 100 million cars from the road.
  • Operates 24/7/365, providing reliable, dispatchable power unmatched by intermittent resources.

Nuclear energy is the largest source of clean electricity in the United States, delivering consistent, emissions-free generation that stabilizes the grid and complements renewable energy sources such as wind and solar.

For USA and its members, this reliability is critical. As electricity demand grows—driven by digital infrastructure, electrification, and economic expansion—nuclear energy provides the firm, carbon-free backbone required to support an “all-of-the-above” clean energy strategy.

USA is helping position its members at the forefront of the next generation of nuclear energy innovation.

USA’s Commitment to Clean Energy Leadership

USA’s mission—“Simple, Cost-Effective Excellence”—extends directly into its support of clean energy. By fostering collaboration among utilities and supplier partners, USA:

  • Enhances plant performance and safety, ensuring long-term operation of clean energy assets.
  • Drives economic efficiency, helping nuclear remain a competitive and affordable clean energy source.
  • Promotes innovation and knowledge sharing, accelerating advancements across the nuclear fleet

This collaborative model allows smaller and mid-sized nuclear operators to achieve the benefits of scale—improving reliability, reducing costs, and strengthening the role of nuclear energy in the clean energy transition.

In alignment with national and global priorities, USA supports policies and initiatives that preserve existing nuclear generation while advancing next-generation technologies to meet future demand.

Advancing Sustainability Through Fuel Innovation: USA and Curio

A critical component of long-term clean energy sustainability is the responsible management and reuse of nuclear fuel. In 2025, USA entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Curio, an innovative leader in advanced nuclear technologies, to explore collaboration on fuel recycling and supply solutions.

Curio is developing a fuel reconstitution and recycling capability through its NuCycle® technology, which:

  • Recovers valuable materials from used nuclear fuel.
  • Reduces high-level waste by up to 97%.
  • Lowers lifecycle emissions by up to 88%.
  • Supports a closed fuel cycle, enhancing sustainability and resource efficiency.

This partnership represents a forward-looking step toward strengthening the nuclear fuel supply chain while addressing one of the industry’s most important challenges—used fuel management. By supporting technologies like those being developed by Curio, USA is helping position its members at the forefront of the next generation of nuclear energy innovation.

A Unified Vision for the Future

USA believes that achieving a clean energy future requires a balanced, integrated approach—one that leverages the strengths of nuclear energy alongside renewables and emerging technologies. Nuclear energy’s ability to deliver carbon-free, reliable, and scalable power makes it indispensable to meeting climate goals, ensuring energy security, and supporting economic growth.

Through collaboration, innovation, and strategic partnerships, Utilities Service Alliance and its members are committed to:

  • Preserving and optimizing existing nuclear assets.
  • Advancing next-generation technologies and fuel cycles.
  • Delivering clean, reliable energy for future generations.

As the energy landscape evolves, USA remains steadfast in its mission to lead, innovate, and elevate nuclear energy’s role in powering a sustainable world.

PROJECT MAXIMUM VALUE

A focused effort by USA to ensure every member is maximizing USA Membership benefits. Our goal is to increase the collective USA member value from $50 million (2024) to $100 million by 2030.
